Main :: Our Crew :: Featured Crew :: Cindy Burchfield Cindy: Being Alaskan is a lifestyle, not just a job
Cindy may have been born and raised in Oklahoma, but she has always been an Alaskan at heart. When she and her husband, Kevin, lived in Colorado, they frequented the annual sportsmen's expo, where they bemoaned the little fish they caught once they saw the big ones from Alaska. They pondered taking a month's salary to go on vacation to Alaska-or they could just move there. They've never looked back since stepping off the ferry in Juneau, Alaska, in 1996. Cindy had done marketing for financial institutions in Colorado and did so in Juneau until a marketing position opened up at Alaskan Brewing Co. That was in 1998, one month before the launch of Alaskan Stout. "We hit the ground running and never stopped," she said. Now the brand manager, Cindy says she has the best marketing position in Alaska. "It's Disneyland with beer." Like Disneyland, Alaskan has some interesting characters. When Cindy first met Brewer Tyler Lindquist she thought, "I can see him in print." That idea gave rise to the "Our Crew, Our Brew" campaign featuring different characters from the crew. Some of her favorite brewery memories are of creating that award-winning advertising campaign. There was the photo shoot in Girdwood with a reserved IT guy and a not-so-reserved moose and another shoot in which snowballs were thrown at the general manager to make the scene more "realistic." Part of the success of the Alaskan brand is its authenticity, Cindy says. We could say the same of Cindy. She is as authentically Alaskan as Alaskan Amber. Take her view of homeownership: "We had our priorities straight. We bought a boat three years before we bought a house." In 2006 Cindy and Kevin leveraged their love of boating and fishing into a business called Lost in Alaska Adventures, where people charter fishing trips on their boat called "Fissues"-"because we don't have issues; we have fissues. After all, the family that slays together stays together." Another way Cindy captures Alaskan wildlife is her art. She began painting in college and picked it back up in the summer of 2002 when she found herself with a week of vacation and no ferry out of Juneau. She wound up creating five watercolors that week and hasn't stopped since. Her favorite subjects are wildlife-crabs, otters and puffins. She sells her artwork at the artists' cooperative downtown. Cindy recently found another avenue to share her artwork: publishing. She wrote and illustrated her first book, "Gimme, Gimme Moocher Marmots," which will be released in November. The children's book about "good marmots gone bad" was inspired by encounters with marmots unapologetically begging for food during a trip with her nieces. In their limited spare time, Cindy and Kevin brew beer. They made their first homebrew in 1999. They called it Mendenhall Brown, because they had made it with an iceberg from Mendenhall Lake. They won their first medal in 2000 and have since become perennial winners at local homebrew festivals. Cindy is an ultimate Brew Crew member, enjoying making beer as much as she does drinking and marketing it. She says it was the interesting characters that first drew her to Alaskan. That must be because here she fits right in. << Back to Featured Crew |
