The Spicy life of Ryan

Ryan Harvey
Ryan Harvey, Production Assistant
They say that "variety is the spice of life," and if that's true, then Ryan Harvey will have a very flavorful life. Take, for example, his refusal to name a favorite beer. "Every time and every setting has a favorite beer," Ryan says. "On a hot summer day, an Alaskan IPA or Boogie Bitter can be refreshing, on a mellow winter night an Alaskan Stout or Barley Wine could be best but above all else, I've probably had more ESB than anything in the last seven years in Juneau."

Ryan came to the Alaskan Brewing Co. by way of the Master Brewers Program at the University of California-Davis in 2000. "A friend had interviewed for a brewer position and didn't get it. He suggested I apply. I had a contact from the brewers program who had worked at Alaskan and the rest is history".

Ryan has worn many hats since he started here but his day is most varied in his current role as Production Assistant . "No two days are ever the same," he says. "One day I am running routine tests, another day I am analyzing data and sometimes I brew on the 1- or 10- barrel brew systems and still other days, I work on rough drafts or brewing efficiencies."

Outside of the brewery, there is a lot that keeps Ryan occupied including fishing, crabbing, duck hunting, photography and baseball. He is a diehard Red Sox fan and recently returned from a cross-country trip where he and his wife, Sarah, visited six baseball stadiums and saw 11 games in 16 days! Included were Safeco Field in Seattle, both Shea & Yankee stadiums in New York, and not surprisingly, Fenway Park in Boston.

Locally, Ryan and Sarah may be better known for their 2007 winning pizza recipe at the Island Pub, a watering hole that serves up brick oven pizzas. Their recipe included no fewer than six toppings.

Some might say that like the pizza, Ryan can be best described as a bit "spicy".
