JUNEAU, Alaska - The Alaskan Brewing Company, Western Washington Beverage and Friendly Distributing announced today that they are raising money during June and July to help rescue and treat Springer, the orphaned Puget Sound orca. The companies will donate $5 from each keg of Alaskan Summer Ale sold in the Seattle area to the Orphaned Orca Fund. The Orca Conservancy is working with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to capture the killer whale and treat it for minor health problems and then return it to the wild to reunite with her pod.

"We are thrilled to be working with our distributors to get Springer the help she needs," says Cindy Burchfield, Alaskan Brewing Company Marketing Manager. “We feel a direct connection to orca whales since their summer presence in Alaska coastal waters inspired us to use them as an icon for our Alaskan Summer Ale.”

The young orca was orphaned last year and has become increasingly friendly with area boats and humans. The rescue plan includes treating and medicating the whale at the NMFS's research station. She will be moved later to the Johnstone Strait where she will be released when her pod arrives this year.

Alaskan Summer Ale features an orca whale as the icon and is represented on draft by a sculptured orca whale tap handle.

The Alaskan Brewing Company produces Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB and Stout year round in addition to a distinguished line of seasonal beers. Founded in 1986, the Juneau-based brewery is distributed throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Northern California and Northern Nevada.
