Authors of Smoked Beers Host Beer Sommelier Tasting in Los Angeles Print E-mail

JUNEAU - Authors of the new book Smoked Beers will host a smoked beer tasting at the Four Points Sheraton LAX on June 20th to benefit charity. Veteran craftbrewer and author, Ray Daniels, and Alaskan Brewing Company brewmaster, Geoffrey Larson, will present an array of samples from Germany, Canada, and various American breweries.

"We will be featuring beers that have been made from malt smoked with a large variety of woods," said Larson. “It will be a real treat to taste beech, hickory, alder, peat, apple and maple wood smoke in different beers and to detect the nuances they contribute to the flavor and aroma of each beer.”

According to Four Points Sheraton general manager Phil Baxter, the Beer Sommelier program and monthly beer appreciation nights, held the third Wednesday of each month, have grown into a networking event for beer enthusiasts of every kind. “We're pleased to have grown from a small event into one that attracts more than 90 people,” said Baxter. “And on June 20 we have the added treat of having the Smoked Beers authors on hand.”

Daniels is editor of New Brewer and Zymurgy, founder of the Real Ale Festival in Chicago and author of several books on beer including Designing Great Beers. Larson is credited with an American revival in smoked beers with the introduction of Alaskan Smoked Porter in 1988. He based the development of that beer on the historical method of creating roasted malt during the Alaska gold rush. Alaskan Smoked Porter is released in vintage releases each fall, allowing a little yeast to remain and aid in cellaring as is common with fine wines.

In addition to vintage years of Alaskan Smoked Porter, tasters will be treated to smoked beers from Schlenkerla, Unibroue, Vermont Pub & Brewery, Arcadia Brewing, Baltimore Brewing, Stone Brewing, Mad River Brewing and Rogue Ales.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. and the cost of $20 includes all samples, raffle tickets and parking. There will also be food pairings, created especially for the event by chef Carlos Solis, available for an extra charge. As always, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Children Affected by Aids Foundation. The Four Points Sheraton LAX is located at 9750 Airport Blvd.
