JUNEAU, ALASKA — October 2, 2006 — The Alaskan Brewing Co. won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) this weekend, keeping hold of its distinction as the most award-winning craft brewery in the history of the GABF. The silver is the second big medal this year for Alaskan Pale, which also won a silver at the 2006 World Beer Cup. A competition favorite, this is the sixth medal that Alaskan Pale has taken home from GABF.
“We’re honored by this win,” said Plant Manager Curtis Holmes, who also was one of the 104 beer judges at GABF. “We have fun making beers that we like to brew and to drink. The fact that they also win awards is a huge bonus.”
The nation’s largest beer festival, which is held in Denver, celebrated its 25th anniversary in record-setting form, with two sold-out sessions and more than 2,400 beers and 450 breweries entered in the competition.
Co-founder Marcy Larson was one of eight Alaskan Brew Crew members who served beer samples to the 41,000 beer enthusiasts. “I couldn’t get over the energy of the brewers and the public. It was truly amazing to be able to share the passion of our craft with so many people in one place.”
In celebration of the GABF’s historic anniversary and the inaugural year of the Vintage category, the Alaskan Brewing Co. offered public tastings of 11 vintages of its Alaskan Smoked Porter, which has won more medals—14 to date—than any other beer in the history of the beer festival.
The rare opportunity to taste the stores of its private library of the beer, which dates back to1988, was a real crowd-pleaser both in Denver and in Juneau, Alaska. In an effort to share the GABF experience with its hometown community, Alaskan Brewing Co. also conducted a special pouring of its vintage Alaskan Smoked Porter at the brewery on Sept. 30, the final day of the festival.
“The response in Juneau took us by surprise,” said Nancy Woizeschke, Merchandise Manager. “It was standing room only and visitors overflowed into our tour hallway. It was to fun to share our special cache of Alaskan Smoked Porter and to cheer our silver medal win with local fans, many of whom have been with us since our start in 1986.”
