Tropical Vacation Tops List of Fantasy Gifts in Local Survey

SEATTLE (February 10, 2005) – It is common knowledge that women hope for jewelry, flowers and lots of romance from their sweethearts on Valentine's Day. But what do men want? Alaskan Brewing Company posed this exact question to men throughout Seattle this past week and, when asked to pick from a long list of traditional Valentine's Day gifts, the top two answers were a massage and a twelve pack of their favorite beer. These top answers both tied with 30% of the vote. A home cooked meal came in third place with 21%. Meanwhile, if price was no object, more than 55% of the men surveyed selected a vacation to a tropical island with their sweetheart as their fantasy gift.

Alaskan Brewing Company, makers of fine craft beers and ales since 1986, hired an independent research company to conduct this survey, which was administered to 200 men in public locations around Seattle's downtown area. Respondents were given a list of gift ideas to pick from including various meal/food options, clothing, cookies and candies, drink selections, physical activities, and flowers – all approximately valued at under $50 – and asked to name only their top choice. A follow up question was asked of all men surveyed concerning the Valentine's gift that they would most desire if price were no object. The statistical choice was a vacation to a tropical island (Hawaii and Tahiti most often named) with 56% choosing this, but the more intriguing answers were coded by surveyors as “various acts of intimacy” with a valentine.

“Seattle is our biggest market and we thought it would be fun to conduct this survey as a way to help women out there figure out what to buy the men in their lives,” said Cindy Burchfield, marketing manager for Alaskan Brewing Company. “Seattle consumers have a penchant for quality craft beers so we had a hunch that beer would contend for the top choice above more traditional gifts. We’d love to see Seattle women package a 12-pack of Alaskan Amber with a massage for the men in their lives.”

The survey was conducted with men ages 21 to 65 and these categories delivered different results. Among men ages 21-30, a selection of their favorite beer was the clear winner with 37% of the vote, followed by the massage at 30%. Men ages 31-40, however, massages were the top choice with 38% followed by a home cooked meal with 28% and beer with 20%. The twelve pack of beer returned as the top choice among men 40+, coming in at 28%, with a home cooked meal, massage and a dozen cookies all tied at 16%.
