JUNEAU - Alaskan Brewing Company scored two international medals June 12 at the World Beer Cup Awards Gala in Aspen, CO. Alaskan is one of three package craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest to garner two awards. Other dual winners were Deschutes Brewery and Rogue Ales.
Alaskan Stout won a gold medal in the Oatmeal Stout category. This is the second international medal for Alaskan Stout. Alaskan Smoked Porter continues to win critical acclaim with a silver medal in the Smoke Flavored Beer Category. This is the fourth medal for Alaskan Smoked Porter at the World Beer Cup.
"We are very honored to be recognized with these medals on the international level," says Alaskan's Plant Manager, Dayton Canaday who was on hand in Aspen to pick up the awards. "We take personal pride in every batch we brew and this serves as a reminder that we make world class beer."
The World Beer Cup International Competition is a global event recognizing excellence in 76 traditional and emerging beer style categories with gold, silver and bronze awards. The gold medal, according to the World Beer Cup, is awarded to “a world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the specified style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance.”
Michael Jackson, a world renowned beer expert and author of many books about beer throughout the world, says that “no other worldwide competition for beer is remotely as well judged” as the World Beer Cup. The World Beer Cup takes place each even numbered year and was founded in 1996.
The Sleeping Lady Brewpub in Anchorage brought home a bronze for their Urban Wilderness Pale Ale and The Moose's Tooth also put in a strong showing by bringing home bronze for their Darth Delirium.
This is the second international competition to honor Alaskan Brewing Company in the last two months. In April, Alaskan ESB brought home the gold and Champion Ale and bronze for Alaskan Smoked Porter from the Brewing Industry International Awards in London. Over the weekend, Alaskan brought home a gold medal for the Smoked Porter and a bronze for Alaskan Winter Ale from the North American Beer Awards. The Alaskan Brewing Company produces Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB and Stout year round in addition to a distinguished line of seasonal beers. Founded in 1986, the Juneau-based brewery is distributed throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Northern California and Northern Nevada.
