Alaskan Brewing Releases Winter Ale and Smoked Porter in England

JUNEAU – For the first time ever, Alaskan Brewing is shipping Winter Ale to England for November release. The 2003 vintage year of Alaskan Smoked Porter will also make the trip to England following last year’s rapid sell through in the market.

“We were happy about the welcome reception of our Smoked Porter in the UK and hope that customers will enjoy another foray into the history of brewing in Alaska with our Winter Ale,” says Alaskan Brewmaster, Geoff Larson. “Like the Smoked Porter, there is a lot of history in this beer and the response has been extremely positive from consumers in the United States.”

Alaskan Winter Ale is brewed with Sitka Spruce tips much as UK Explorer Captain Cook may have done during his exploration of the Alaska Inside Passage in the 1700’s. The new spring growth of the spruce tree has a floral aroma and was used effectively by Cook to prevent Vitamin C deficiency. Sitka Spruce tips don’t have the piney, resin flavor or aroma associated with most spruce varieties and are still used by Southeast Alaskans to brew tea, make jelly and homebrew beer.

Brewed in the style of English Olde Ale, Alaskan Winter Ale is copper in color with a rich, full body and the warming sensation of alcohol. The tender new growth of Sitka Spruce tips lends a subtle, sweet floral aroma that is balanced by the crispness of noble hops.

Alaskan Smoked Porter showcases alder smoked malt in a rich strong porter. Porters originated in England and the style was later brewed in Juneau, Alaska during the gold rush. Historical evidence suggests smoke was part of the porter’s brewed in Alaska due to the necessity of direct roasting barley malt over open fires.

Brewed only once each year in small amounts, the limited edition Alaskan Smoked Porter can be successfully aged. “We allow a little yeast to remain in each bottle and the alder smoke acts as a preservative,” says Larson. “This allows the beer to continue to develop in the bottle over the years. The smoke flavor becomes more of a background note as it ages, allowing sherry, plum and raisin notes to emerge.”

The most award-winning craft brewery in the United States at the Great American Beer Festival, Alaskan Brewing Company has been brewing historically influenced beers in Juneau, Alaska since 1986.
