(Juneau, AK)—Alaskan Big Nugget Barley Wine 2003 picked up its second medal with a silver medal at the Great Alaska Winter Brew and Barley Wine Festival.

For the first time since the inception of the festival, breweries in Alaska swept the awards in a blind judging. Over 20 barley wines from around the country came to what is one of the largest gatherings of the style.

Industry experts, beer writers and certified beer judges from around the country awarded prizes to the top 3 entries on Friday, January 16 before a crowd of enthusiastic winter brew fans. The blind judging panel deliberated five hours before announcing the winners.

Anchorage’s Glacier Brewhouse took top honors with its “Old Woody”. Juneau’s Alaskan Brewing was awarded a silver medal for Alaskan Big Nugget Barley Wine 2003 followed by Anchorage’s Midnight Sun Arctic Devil Barley Wine. Honorable Mention was awarded to Anchorage’s Sleeping Lady Brewery for Old Gander Barley Wine. All four breweries are located in Alaska.

“We are very excited,” says Alaskan co-founder Marcy Larson. “It’s a great showing for us and particularly for the state of Alaska. The word is out - we brew great beer in Alaska!”

Alaskan Big Nugget Barley Wine 2003 was brewed in February 2003 and aged in an old mineshaft in Juneau during the summer, much as may have been done at the turn of the century by local brewers. “The cool, constant temperature is great for aging this beer and the historical relationship makes it a natural for Alaskan Brewing,” says Larson.

Alaskan Brewing Company was founded in 1986 and produces historical interpretations in a number of its products. Alaskan Smoked Porter is brewed using alder smoked malt, Alaskan Amber is based on a gold rush era recipe used by a local brewery and the Alaskan Winter Ale showcases Sitka Spruce tips as did Captain Cook in the 1700’s. Alaskan Big Nugget Barley Wine 2003 is part of the Rough Draft series of beers produced in limited amounts and is available only on draft.
