Unprecedented Demand for Alaskan Winter Ale Depletes Stock

JUNEAU – Fans of Alaskan Winter Ale in the Pacific Northwest soon may not find it. Despite forecasting growth and brewing more, the company has depleted all 2004 stocks.

“Due to unprecedented consumer demand, we have run out and will not be brewing more, this season” said Alaskan Director of Marketing and Sales, Fred Hees. “We brewed 12% more and it sold out, in ˝ the anticipated time. It’s all gone except for what is currently on store shelves.”

Sitka spruce tips are only harvested in the springtime. The Juneau, Alaska based brewery uses the fresh new growth from the Sitka Spruce in the brewing process to impart a fresh, floral aroma. Adding spruce to beer is not a new phenomenon, Captain Cook brewed with spruce to prevent Vitamin C deficiency among his crew during his exploration of Alaska in the 1700’s.

“Living in a remote Alaska community with no roads that connect us to the lower 48 states, we have become expert planners. However, we couldn’t have forecasted this surge in popularity,” said Hees. “We have bumped up the production date for our Alaskan Summer Ale for the south western desert states so that there will still be a seasonal beer available in late February.”

The Alaskan Brew Crew produces Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB and Stout year round in addition to a distinguished line of seasonal beers. Founded in 1986, the Juneau-based brewery is distributed throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, California, Nevada and will add Arizona at the end of December.
