JUNEAU – Alaskan Brewing Company captured three medals, two gold and one silver, at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, Colorado over the weekend. The 2005 edition of the annual GABF featured samples of 1,669 of the nation’s best beers from 380 American breweries. According to event planners, it was the biggest selection of American beers ever gathered together on the globe.

Among the medals was a gold in smoke-flavored beer for Alaskan Smoked Porter, dubbed “The Best Beer in the U.S.” by readers of Zymurgy magazine earlier this year. Returning favorite, Alaskan ESB, took a silver medal in the extra special bitter category matching its 2004 GABF performance. Taking the crowd by surprise was a gold in the bitters for Alaskan Boogie Bitter, one of the breweries newest Rough Draft (R&D) releases.

Midnight Sun Brewing Company of Anchorage won a bronze for their Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter in the coffee flavored beer category. Also of Anchorage, Moose’s Tooth Brewing Company took two bronzes for Prince William Porter in the brown porter category and Pipeline Stout in the American-style stout category. Pooled with Alaskan’s three medals, this makes the most GABF medals ever brought home to Alaska.

With thousands of beers competing for honors in 69 categories, GABF medals are the most coveted distinctions in the beer industry. Beers are judged by a professional panel of brewers, industry members, writers and beer experts in a series of blind tastings.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our brew crew and fellow brewers from Alaska,” said Brewmaster and Co-founder Geoff Larson. “It brings national recognition to Alaska and the local influences that make brewing beer here unlike anywhere else in the world.”

Alaskan Brewing Company’s three new medals secure their place as the most award-winning small craft brewery in the history of the GABF with 33 medals. Alaskan Smoked Porter accounts for 14 medals with six among them gold. The Alaskan ESB has nine medals with its earliest medals won as a Rough Draft release. Following in the ESB’s footsteps, this is the first medal for Alaskan Boogie Bitter.

Alaskan Rough Draft brews are limited editions usually released only in Alaska. Most of Alaskan’s year round brews are born in the brewery’s smaller 10 barrel brewhouse as Rough Drafts.

October 1st marked another milestone for Alaskan Brewing Company as the first day passengers on Alaska Airlines could order Alaskan Amber on-board all flights and in the airline’s Boardroom.

“Our crew had four reasons to celebrate,” said Co-founder Marcy Larson. “Not only were they coming home with two golds and a silver, but they could enjoy an Alaskan beer on the flight home.”

Celebrating 19 years of brewing world class beer, the Juneau-based brewery produces Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB, and Stout year round. Alaskan Winter Ale, Summer Ale and Smoked Porter make regular appearances in limited amounts. Distribution extends throughout the Pacific Northwest, encompassing Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, California, Nevada and Arizona.
