Press Release
“It was great to bring home two medals from this prestigious event,” says Alaskan Plant Manager, Curtis Holmes. “The brew crew was very excited. To be competing against other breweries from around the world and win even one medal is quite an honor, so we feel very fortunate to have done so well. It shows that our efforts toward making a world class beer are not going unnoticed.” Every two years a highly qualified professional panel of beer judges from around the world honors the top three beers in 85 beer style categories with gold, silver and bronze awards. The World Beer Cup is often referred to as "the Olympics of Beer Competitions" because it is one of the very few international beer competitions awarding only one gold, silver and bronze in each category. The tasting panel is “blind” so judges do not know the identity of the beers or what breweries are entered into the competition when they are evaluating the beers. Three to four judges evaluate each beer and then a panel of six to seven judges determines the medal winners in each category. Other breweries located in Alaska faired well with Moose’s Tooth Brewing Co. from Anchorage taking Silver in the Smoke-Flavored Beer Category for Smokin’ Willie Smoked Porter and Sleeping Lady Brewing Co. winning Silver for Urban Wilderness Pale Ale in the Classic English-Style Pale Ale category. “We were happy to see other breweries in Alaska coming home with medals from this competition,” says Holmes. “Alaska is a difficult place to brew beer and receiving recognition by the industry for that hard work gives everyone a morale boost and validates what we do every day. The medals also prove that the breweries in Alaska are continuing to make excellent products; this directly benefits the local consumers who can enjoy such a diverse array of quality beer.” “The World Beer Cup has become the global stage by which brewers world-wide showcase the quality craftsmanship, flavor and diversity of their beers and in so doing highlight their own achievements and the enduring culture of beer,” stated Charlie Papazian, founder of the World Beer Cup and president of the Brewers Association. The 2006 Brewers Association World Beer Cup had 2,221 entries from 540 breweries in 56 countries. Alaskan Brewing Company distributes internationally award-winning beers throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, California and Arizona. Founded in 1986, Alaskan Brewing Company is the oldest operating brewery in the State of Alaska. The Juneau-based brewery produces Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB, and Stout year round as well as seasonal brews including Smoked Porter, Winter Ale and Summer Ale. #### For more information, contact Kristi Monroe at (907) 780-5866.
