Press Release
Alaskan Brewing Company's most successful seasonal brew, Smoked Porter, will hit the shelves on November 1st. Since the first case was sold in 1988, Smoked Porter has been Alaskan's most anticipated beer and perhaps the hardest to find, selling out quickly. The malt used in this fall classic is smoked over indigenous alder wood at a local commercial smokehouse. This labor intensive process has continued to limit the amount produced, making it as elusive as it is exclusive. From the brewery's early days, co-founders Geoff and Marcy Larson sought to emulate beers that may have been brewed in Juneau during the gold rush or that carried some characteristics of the region in their flavor profile. Both come to light (or is that dark?) in Alaskan Smoked Porter. Research indicated turn of the century gold miners drank porters from the region's small breweries. Geoff and Marcy speculated that roasted malts at the turn of the century in Alaska must have been kilned over a fire and would pick up traces of the smoke. Thus, the idea to smoke the malt materialized with the help of Taku Smokeries, a fish smoking plant located in Juneau. Alaskan Smoked Porter has a dark, robust body with a pronounced smoky flavor and is available in limited amounts throughout the Pacific Northwest.
