What's New Articles
The Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival, which is held at the William A. Egan Convention Center, is the premier beer event in the state, and it is growing and gaining more recognition each year. The event draws entries and guests from all over the country. Alaskan Big Nugget is aged in the 500-foot tunnel that used to house the crushed rock handling chutes and conveyors when gold was mined in the 1930s. The cool tunnels provided a great place to store beer before the days of refrigeration. Alaskan Big Nugget is brewed in the spring, cellared in the mine for the summer and retrieved in time for its release at the Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival each year. AHA is hoping to grow its membership by tapping the beer lovers gathered in Anchorage for the beer festival. The group is holding a membership rally at 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Snow Goose Restaurant in Anchorage. In addition to Larson, beer writer Carolyn Smagalski (a k a The Beer Fox) and Anheuser-Busch Senior Brewmaster George Reisch are the guest speakers. “I’m really excited about this rally. I feel like a beer evangelist preaching to the choir, because I enjoy sharing my love of beer,” Larson said. “As a homebrewer myself, I feel a special kinship with homebrewers. They share my passion—and they make great beer.” Other sponsors of the AHA event include Midnight Sun Brewing Co., Sleeping Lady Brewing Co., Silver Gulch Brewing Co. and Arctic Brewing Supply.
