Alaskan Brewing Co. celebrates 21st birthday with release of Alaskan IPA

JUNEAU, ALASKA — The only thing better than toasting your 21st birthday with a beer is toasting with a beer created just for the occasion. Alaskan Brewing Co. is releasing Alaskan IPA, just in time for its 21st birthday. The April release is the first one for the brewery based in Juneau, Alaska, since the launch of Alaskan Summer Ale in 2002. Alaskan IPA will be available in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.

“We’re well-known for our malty beers like Alaskan Amber,” said Alaskan Brewmaster and Co-owner Geoff Larson. “We wanted to challenge that presumption by brewing a style that’s known for its hop character. So we took the IPA style and made it uniquely Alaskan.”

***image2: left***Alaskan IPA offers a fruity, citrus aroma, with a medium body and a clean, refreshing hop finish. Operations Manager Dave Wilson had a hand in refining the final recipe. “What characterizes this beer is its drinkability. We made Alaskan IPA to appeal equally to craft beer drinkers as well as hopheads,” Wilson said.

The new brew takes its cues from the surfing culture in Yakutat, Alaska, a coveted destination since Outside magazine named it “one of the five best surf towns in America.” The ice-cold waves of Yakutat that break in the shadows of Mount Saint Elias, which towers 18,000 feet above, inspired a beer made with glacier-fed water, a special blend of malts and lots and lots and lots of hops—2.5 pounds per barrel. The cool colors and surfing imagery of the packaging perfectly suit the taste.

Jack Endicott, owner of Icy Waves Surf Shop in Yakutat, says surfing in the remote coastal Alaska community is unlike surfing anywhere else in the world. He recalls watching two of his sons surfing in 25-degree temperatures, with snow falling so hard that he lost sight of them. “I’ll never forget standing on the beach and watching the steam rise from their heads after they removed their hoods,” he said.

Endicott says he is impressed that Alaskan Brewing Co. successfully captures the unique experience of surfing in Alaska with Alaskan IPA.

Tyler Lindquist, a surfer as well as an Alaskan Brewing brewer, says the two are a perfect match. “Yakutat is an adventure in surfing, and Alaskan IPA is an adventure in taste.”
