Press Release
Fans of Alaskan's most sought after brew know that Alaskan Smoked Porter can be aged a lot like a fine wine. Every year has a distinct flavor personality that develops over time. Unlike regular beers that have shelf lives of 4 to 6 months, some vintages of Alaskan Smoked Porter have been successfully cellared for over 10 years. The alder-smoked malt acts almost like a preservative for the beer - kind of the way smoking fish or ham enhances longevity. In addition, Alaskan brewers allow a little of the yeast to remain in the beer, allowing the beer to further develop as it ages. The flavors over the years range from the intense smoke of a recent year's vintage to sherry-like, plum and raisin notes in 4-5-year-old vintages. Vertical tastings have been held in which several years of Smoked Porter are served side by side for Smoked Beer fans to savor and delight in the changes of time. So, set aside an extra case this year in anticipation of future vintage tastings with good friends.
