The Alaskan Brew Crew and many other Alaskans joined legions of beer lovers around the world on Sept. 30 to toast the life of Michael Jackson, the venerated Beer Hunter. More than $4,000 was raised in his honor for the National Parkinson Foundation at events in Anchorage and Juneau.

An estimated 200 people, including brewers, retailers, homebrewers and other beer lovers, joined the celebration at Café Amsterdam in Anchorage. Eleven of the 12 breweries in Alaska, including Alaskan Brewing Co., donated beer to the event. Anchorage local and national beer writer Jim Roberts, a k a Dr. Fermento, led the toast at 5 p.m. Alaska Standard Time. One of the highlights of the evening was a silent auction that included a case of 1996 Alaskan Smoked Porter that was part of Café Amsterdam owners Ken and Shauna Pajak’s personal stash. Beer sales and a silent auction raised $3,653.

Alaskan Brewing Co. also took part in the worldwide toast to Jackson at an intimate gathering at the brewery in Juneau that raised $500 for research and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. About 25 members of the Alaskan Brew Crew and community shared tales of Jackson and toasted his life as a beer bard, a craft beer connoisseur and a man. General Manager Linda Thomas led the official toast with a glass of Alaskan Smoked Porter, which was fitting because it was one that Jackson celebrated—even traveling to Juneau from England to taste it.

Geoff Larson, co-founder and brewmaster of Alaskan Brewing Co., recounted that trip during the brewery celebration on Sunday. “Michael was pretty much game for any adventure involving beer and food,” Larson said.

“While he was in Juneau we took a helicopter up to a remote frozen lake with two hanging glaciers that were creating large falls of ice,” Larson said. “We had a picnic lunch and while these huge pieces of ice would come down the mountainsides, thundering. We all kind of looked around making sure it was safe as Michael picked up an ice ax and did a little mock ice climbing, mentioning that he was doing a video piece called the beer hunter.”

Larson said the 20-below-zero temperatures in Fairbanks didn’t seem to faze Jackson either. He raised a pint of Alaskan Smoked Porter to Jackson’s open mind and spirit of adventure. “Michael chronicled the stories of beer that he found as he traveled,” Larson said. “The beer environment was enhanced by the who, what, where and why information he captured, preserved and showcased.”
