JUNEAU, ALASKA — The Alaskan Brewing Co. has been presented the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award for its outstanding employee safety and health programs. This is the fourth consecutive SHARP award for the craft brewery since 2001.

“This company has been setting a tremendous example by meshing a top-notch workplace safety and health program into its business plan,” said Click Bishop, commissioner of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, which administers SHARP, a federal recognition program. “The success this company has had should make it crystal clear how important it is to focus real effort on workplace safety.”

To qualify for SHARP a company must have an injury illness rate below the national average and have a complete safety and health management program that is found to be satisfactory in every category, said Bill Nickerson, SHARP coordinator for the state of Alaska. Nickerson said those categories include hazard prevention and control; safety and health training, planning and evaluation; and management and employee participation. Alaskan Brewing Co.’s Juneau plant is one of only 17 SHARP sites in the state, he said.

“Our Brew Crew is like a family,” said Heather Conlin, Human Resources Manager for Alaskan Brewing. “We care as much about the health and safety of our crew as we do about the taste and quality of our beer. We’ve found that our investment in a healthier and safer work environment has also led to greater crew satisfaction and productivity. We can’t think of a better investment.”
