Alaskan Brewing First to Install CO2 Recovery System

Brewing green and clean! Alaskan Brewing is becoming the first microbrewery in the country to install a CO2 recovery system.

Brewing green and clean! Alaskan Brewing is becoming the first microbrewery in the country to install a CO2 recovery system. The system is designed to reclaim carbon dioxide, a natural by-product of the brewing process and used to package the beer and purge oxygen from holding tanks, saving money and the environment.

Until now, Alaskan has spent upwards of $100,000 a year for CO2, storage and shipping. With both the cost and the fact that Alaskan's supplier was having a tough time keeping up with demand, the brewery decided to take this pioneering step.

Alaskan Brewing ordered a system consisting of a gas washer, activated carbon filter, dryer and CO2 liquifier. CO2 is produced during the yeast fermentation process and until now the excess gas was released into the environmenet. CO2 is a greenhouse gas contributing to the depletion of the ozone, and the ability to reduce those emissions was important to the brewery.

"The recovery system makes obvious good economic sense," says Alaskan Brewing Co. co-founder Marcy Larosn. "But we're also very excited that this step is environmentally friendly."

Throughout its life, Alaskan Brewing has taken extra steps to brew "green and clean." It recycles its bottles in Juneau, collecting them and shipping them back to the suppliers in Seattle, where they are crushed and reused. And it is exploring markets for its spent grain.
