Over $700 was raised for the Juneau Raptor Center's Building Fund at the alaskan Brewing Company's Winter Beer Tasting last week at the Red Dog Saloon.

Over $700 was raised for the Juneau Raptor Center's Building Fund at the alaskan Brewing Company's Winter Beer Tasting last week at the Red Dog Saloon. More than one hundred beer enthusiasts came to taste six limited edition Rough Drafts with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Juneau Raptor Center.

"The Raptor Center volunteers perform an invaluable service to the community in their dedication to rehabilitation and release of injured birds in Southeast Alaska and we are proud to be in a position to assist them," says Marcy Larson, co-founder of the Alaskan Brewing Company. "Eagles are so often associated with Alaska that the match is a natural for us."

The Winter Beer Tasting was standing room only. It was the second in a series of events to raise awareness and cash for a medical clinic and flight mew, critical for the rehabilitation of injured birds. It was the only opportunity for beer lovers and bird lovers to taste these limited beers side by side. Tasted at the event were: Alaskan Winter Solstice Ale, Alaskan Scotch Frost Ale, Alaskan Belgian-Style Ale, Alaskan Winter Warmer, Alaskan Winter Spiced Ale and Alaskan Cabin Fever Ale.

The Rough Draft program is a research and development program for the Juneau based craft brewery. "It's an opportunity for our brewers to design and brew beers for the pure art of brewing" says Kristi Saviers, Alaskan Production Manager. "Both the Alaskan Frontier and the Alaskan Stout had their beginnings in limited edition runs and were test marketed for potential success in the year-round market through programs like this."

The first benefit for the Raptor Center at Food Fest '99, organized by Juneau's daily newspaper, The Juneau Empire, raised $1400. The Juneau Raptor Center was established in 1986 and treats, rehabilitates and releases injured birds of prey, including bald eagles as well as other types of birds from hummingbirds to blue herons. Volunteers at the Juneau Raptor Center treated over 200 birds in 1999.
