Alaskan Winter Ale Returns for 2001 Season

JUNEAU - Alaskan Brewing Company released their limited edition winter seasonal, Alaskan Winter Ale, throughout the Pacific Northwest in October.

"Alaskan Winter Ale was very successful last year upon its introduction," said Alaskan Brewmaster Geoff Larson. “We found that people really embraced the Alaskan flavor of and the local aroma of Sitka Spruce tips. It's not like any other beer out there and the response from distributors, retailers and consumers was very positive.”

Inspired by the use of spruce tips in beer by seafaring adventurers during the 1700’s, Alaskan Brewing produced Alaskan Winter Ale with Sitka Spruce Tips. Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, Alaskan’s seasonal offering is copper in color with a full body, and the warming sensation of alcohol. The tender new growth of Sitka Spruce tips lends a subtle, sweet floral aroma that is balanced by the crispness of noble hops.

“There is a misconception that spruce tips are piney. Instead they offer a light, fresh aroma and flavor,” said Lead Brewer Brent Kesey. “Alaskan Winter Ale was designed as a winter beer, to be served with holiday foods or perfect for just enjoying by the fireplace.”

The use of regional ingredients and influences is not new to the Alaskan Brew Crew. Alaskan is known internationally for Alaskan Smoked Porter, brewed with alder smoked malt. Alder wood is traditionally used in Alaska to smoke salmon. The flagship, Alaskan Amber, is based on a gold rush era recipe brewed in the local Juneau area during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Alaskan Winter Ale will be available throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Northern Nevada and Northern California for a limited time this fall. Founded in 1986, Alaskan Brewing Company is the oldest operating brewery in the State of Alaska. The Juneau-based brewery also brews Alaskan Amber, Pale, ESB and Stout year round.
