The World Beer Cup International Competition has confirmed what American beer lovers have known for years. Alaskan Brewing Company brews world-class beers. Alaskan Smoked Porter took Silver in the Smoked Beer category. This is a repeat of its silver performance in the first competition in 1996. Alaskan Pale received an Honorable Mention in a field of 27 entries in the Golden Ale category.

Twenty countries were represented by 836 entries in 68 beer style categories. Alaskan Brewing Company was the only brewery from Alaska chosen as a finalist in the competition.

Honors were awarded at the International Beer Executives Symposium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brewery co-founders Geoff and Marcy Larson were present for the awards ceremony.

"Recognition like this affirms our commitment to producing a world-class beer that is enjoyed not only in the United States, but internationally as well," said Marcy Larson.

This is the second annual World Beer Cup International Competition. Established in 1996 by the Association of Brewers, the competition is held every two years to educate consumers about different beer styles and flavor profiles while promoting international brewing excellence.

Judgining took place earlier this year at the Institut for Brewing Studies National Craft Brewers Conference and Trade Show. An international panel of trained judges reviewed the entries using the most comprehensive beer style guidelines in the industry. Those honored with gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention were determined to embody the best flavor and the best visual and aromatic characteristics, according to the Association of Brewers.

Alaskan Brewing Company opened in 1986 in Juneau, Alaska where it brews and bottles Alaskan Amber, Alaskan Pale, Alaskan Frontier, and its newest year-round addition, Alaskan Stout. Alaskan Smoked Porter is brewed seasonally in time for the holidays. Alaskan Brewing Company beers are available throughout Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and California.
