Everyone in Alaska that has been here for any length of time has a bear story and Damien Horvath is no exception. Well traveled throughout Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the Virgin Islands, Damien landed in Southeast Alaska six years ago after high school. "I was supposed to be here for a two week vacation and I just never left. I'm an Alaskan by choice," says Damien. He jumped right into enjoying the good life, which always includes bear encounters.

An avid fisherman, Damien has found himself face to face with black bears on remote streams. "Most of the time you can just watch them and they are fine with you there, though one time I was stalked for miles deep into the woods until I could circle back to the trailhead and the safety of the car," he says.

But he wouldn't have it any other way. "I make the most out of the state I live in: fishing, hiking, camping, and enjoying Alaska," says Damien. "I have always been drawn to the water and now I share my love of the sea and marine ecology with my daughter. It's a sharp contrast to the Virgin Islands where I grew up, but the fascination is still there."

Fascination with Alaska turned into a fascination with Alaskan Brewing Company. "I was looking for a job that offered me the opportunity to grow and have fun as well as contribute by producing a quality product," he recalls. "I found that at Alaskan Brewing Company."

Damien represented Alaskan Brewing Company at the Great American Beer Festival. "It was my first industry event and I was amazed by the scope and size of the whole festival," he says. "We got really great feedback from fans and it gave me a real sense of pride in who I work for and what I do."

Damien manages to make the most of his free time and aside from the usual Alaska activities he plays bass and contributes vocals for the band, Brownhaven. The band, made up of Brew Crew, has played at the Celebrator's 15th Anniversary Celebration, local Battle of the Bands, and any open mike night in town. If you are in town when they are playing, then tune in, tune up and enjoy the show with an Alaskan…by choice!
