Perseverance Ale
Release: September 1, 2011

porter_style
Alaskan Perseverance Ale is a Russian Imperial Stout. This style was chosen to celebrate our 25th anniversary of brewing on the Last Frontier in our coastal home of Juneau, Alaska.

porter_flavor
This complex and malt forward Imperial Stout is brewed with an array of local ingredients and flavors to add dimension and celebrate Alaskan’s history and home. Alaska birch syrup from Wasilla lends a deep, almost tart character to the dark malt profile, while fireweed honey from Delta Junction adds a delicate sweetness and floral notes to the aroma and finish. The slight addition of our in-house alder-smoked malt alludes to the distinctive roasted flavor of turn-of-the-century malting practices, without overpowering the more subtle flavors of this dynamic anniversary brew.

porter_history
To celebrate their quarter-century milestone, the Alaskan Brew Crew wanted to create a beer that was big, bold and brewed with ingredients from Alaska that could be enjoyed fresh or cellared to be brought out to remember the anniversary for years to come. The Russian heritage still present throughout our state make this Russian Imperial Stout a tribute to all that makes our beers truly Alaskan.

porter_ingrediients
This limited edition Imperial Stout is brewed with glacier-fed water, birch syrup from the Alaska Birch Syrup Co., fireweed honey from BeeAlaskan Apiaries, brown sugar and an array of different malts including malted oats and a dash of our world famous alder-smoked malt.

smoked_recommendations
The sturdy flavors in Alaskan Perseverance Ale pair well with rich and savory proteins ranging from fresh oysters to wild game meats. Custards, dark chocolate truffles, New York cheesecake and other creamy desserts bring out the the sweeter notes of fireweed honey, oats and brown sugar.

perseverance_story

Brewing in a remote town with no roads leading in or out has never been easy but, like the turn-of-the-century breweries of Juneau’s Gold Rush who overcame all odds to serve the thirsty miners of the local, and appropriately named, Perseverance Mine, Alaskan’s founders and employees continue to persevere. The connection between brewing and mining in Alaska goes back to when the brewers of early Juneau stored their ales in the dark and cool tunnels of area mines. The Perseverance Mine closed over 60 years ago, but the historic Perseverance Trail is now one of Juneau’s favorite hiking trails and provides a reminder of the founding history and pioneering spirit that carries on at the Alaskan Brewery today.

In Babylonia 4,000 years ago, a bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink for a month after the wedding. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which eventually came to be known as the honeymoon.
