Alaskan 'tips' Southeast Alaskan Food Bank more than $10,000
JUNEAU, Alaska (December 18, 2009) - Today we handed Darren Adams of the Southeast Alaska Food Bank a check for $10,819.84 - a year's worth of tips from our generous customers and crew collected in a modest tip jar at our tasting bar. Some tippers knew where their money was going when they dropped a dollar into the jar, while others think it's going to the big smiles and knowledgeable crew serving up samples behind the bar - but every penny is donated to a local nonprofit selected by the Alaskan Brew Crew.
At the end of each year, the Brew Crew at the Alaskan Brewery review the list of more than 50 nonprofit organizations to vote for the next year's recipient of the proceeds collected in the tip jar at our tasting bar. When the economy turned in 2009, our crew was even more inspired to give back, especially to our friends and neighbors that needed a little extra help - which is why we selected the Southeast Alaska Food Bank. We think our patrons felt the same because despite the recession we were able to donate a record-breaking $10, 819.84, up from the $10,000 (another record-breaker) we donated last year.
Past recipients include the AWARE Shelter in 2008, Cancer Connection in 2007, the Gastineau Humane Society in 2006 and 2003, Trail Mix, Inc. in 2004 and Hospice & Homecare of Juneau in 2005.
When we first spoke with Darren Adams at the beginning of the year, he reminded us that while donations during the holidays are crucial, the need is there all year. We took that to heart and made our first donation to the Food Bank at the end of the busy Alaska tourist season in August. We hope that this last boost will help Darren serve our local families and friends during the holiday season.
The Alaskan Brewing Company has a long history of community involvement and local support. We provide in-kind donations to many organizations throughout the year, but this is our crew's chance to participate in the selection of which local nonprofit receives our one of the only monetary donations we make each year. The other recipient is the Coastal CODE (Clean Oceans Depend on Everyone), a nonprofit grant funding organization dedicated to the health and sustainability of the Pacific Ocean and its coastlines, that is funded through 1% of proceeds from Alaskan IPA.
