Alaskan Smoked Porter wins Gold at Great American Beer Fest
Smoked Porter holds on to title as most award-winning beer in festival history
Juneau, Alaska (September 2010) - Alaskan Brewing Co. won a gold medal at the 29th annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, Colorado, the largest commercial beer competition in the world.
Alaskan Smoked Porter took top honors in the Smoked beer category, solidifying its reign as the festival's highest award-winner with 19 medals since 1988. It has been a good year for the Smoked Porter, which also brought home gold for the 1998 vintage in the aged-beer category from the biennial World Beer Cup Awards early this spring.

"Winning a medal GABF is so exciting for us," said Alaskan Plant Manager Curtis Holmes on hearing the Smoked Porter gold medal announcement. A record number of entries, up nine percent to more than 3,500, heightened the competition at the 2010 competition. "There are so many excellent smoked beers out on the market now; it is great to see that after all of these years the beer judges still recognize our smoked porter recipe as one of the best commercial examples of this style in the United States."
This year, 516 breweries from all over the country came together at the premier U.S. brewing industry event to vie for gold, silver and bronze in 79 beer-style categories. 151 professional brewers and industry experts from 10 countries judged the 3,523 beers entered in the competition.
According to the Brewers Association, more than 49,000 beer enthusiasts from Colorado, the United States, and around the world attended this year's sold-out GABF, which was held at the 188,000 square-foot Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Those attending the three-day festival were offered one ounce samples from largest collection of U.S. beers ever assembled.
Alaskan was the only brewery from Alaska to bring home a 2010 GABF medal for the 49th state.
The Smoked Porter medal comes on the heels of the release of another dark and unmistakable beer from Alaskan Brewing - Alaskan Double Black IPA. This new brew, which released throughout the western states on September 1, is a big, bold and style-challenging hybrid of styles, and the latest addition to the Alaskan's Pilot Series of limited edition specialty brews.
