Rebecca: Embodies, shares Alaskan spirit, September 1, 2006

Rebecca Jay
Rebecca and her daughter, Rachel, believe that those who travel together, stay together.
Rebecca Jay may have lived in Washington state for the past 23 years, but we consider her an Alaskan. Rebecca just celebrated her 10th anniversary with Alaskan Brewing Co. as a district sales manager. Rebecca considers herself "a country girl at heart," having grown up in the Midwest and living in Carnation, Wash., population 2,000. As the first woman to work on Carnation Farm in the 1970s, Rebecca also has the distinction of being the first woman to roll a dump truck filled with cow manure!

Another first was being the first saleswoman to work for Western Washington Beverage, now called Alaska Distributors. The year was 1988, and she figures she was one of the first women in the beer industry. "I have never felt that to be handicap. I did my job well and I was respected for that," she says. She may also be respected for catching a 114-pound halibut, the biggest catch of the day during a distributor incentive trip to Alaska.

Rebecca’s first experience with Alaskan Brewing was a distributor incentive trip to Alaska, visiting the brewery and fishing. When she called Ed Cesarone to thank him for the trip, he recruited her. Her first impressions of brewery have been lasting ones: "small, family-oriented and dedicated to making good beer." So, too, are her impressions of Alaska: wet, beautiful and friendly.

It may be Rebecca’s dedication and passion for her family, travel and philanthropy that make her such a natural fit for the Brew Crew. She is deeply proud of her daughter and favorite travel companion, Rachel Smith, now 24. (One of their favorite trips was to Spain.) The other members of the family are two dogs and three cats. Rebecca feels her responsibilities start with her family, but they don’t end there. She joined Rotary, because the organization helps raise money for worthwhile causes that benefit the community and the world.

It’s that kind of heart that she brings to her work, too. When asked what she most enjoys about her work, she says, "The personal and business relationships that I have established with my distributors and co-workers. My work is as much about relationships as it is about beer."
