Rough Drafts

Innovation has long been a hallmark of life in Alaska. That characteristic applies to Alaskan Brewing Company as well. The Juneau-based brewery enjoys brewing beers of various styles just for fun and some with historical significance.

"Our Brew Crew likes to experiment and we also have an interest in the historical influences of brewing during the gold-rush era in Juneau." says Geoff Larson, Alaskan Brewmaster and Co-founder. This interest has led to more than the gold-rush era recipe for the Alaskan Amber and beyond the well-known alder-smoked Porter. The most recent innovation for Alaskan fans led to Alaskan Winter Ale, an Olde Ale brewed with Sitka Spruce tips following the history of Captain Cook using spruce in ale during his exploration of the Alaska Inside Passage.

The Brew Crew can, as part of a research, development and cross-training team, participate in the Rough Draft program. "The Rough Draft program is an opportunity for our crew to design and brew beers for the pure art of brewing" says Brent Kesey, Alaskan Lead Brewer. "Both the Alaskan ESB and the Alaskan Stout had their beginnings in limited edition runs and were test marketed for potential success in the year-round market through programs like this."

Rough Drafts.
Rough Draft beers are brewed in small amounts for local distribution. Teams of about 4 brewery employees from a wide range of departments get together under the guidance of one of the brewers to research, discuss, and ultimately brew a Rough Draft beer. The program enables everyone from accounting and sales to maintenance and packaging to get a feel for brewing a specialty beer. "It fosters understanding, information sharing and knowledge of how their work is an important part of brewing beer, not to mention the camaraderie," says Kesey.

Various styles such as India Pale Ales, Bocks, and Dunkels have been brewed to the delight of local consumers and those fortunate enough to be traveling through town. Local history and local ingredients play a role as well, hence the brewing of Sumatra Stout, using locally roasted Heritage coffee, and Big Nugget Barleywine that was aged in a gold mine, much as might have occurred during the gold rush. If you make it to Juneau, check out the latest offering but do it quickly as they don't last long!
