Sean: Weekend mountain man

Sean McLaughlin A self-proclaimed "weekend mountain man," Packager Sean has stared down bears, pulled his crab pots by hand and taken full advantage of living in Alaska.

Sean's passion for the outdoors often leads him into the woods. Once while hiking through some blueberry bushes he heard some crashing. When he got through the brush he found himself face to face with a large black bear. "He charged me four or five steps and snorted. I told him 'Mr. Bear, I don't want to hurt you, let me go,'" he remembers. "We looked at each other for a while and then both left. I couldn't tell you if he went up or down the trail. I just know that I didn't follow him and he didn't follow me."

"There is nothing like being in Alaska. The bears are just one amazing part of living here," he says. "There is nothing like eating king crab on the beach and having salmon on the grill when you are camping." And with Sean there is no messing around. He pulls his king crab pots by hand from 400 feet! "It's a little hard to find a crew to go with you once they discover I don't have a winch yet and we have to pull," he chuckles. He taught co-worker, Heather, how to crab and she was featured as a full-size "Our crew, Our brew" display piece for Alaskan Brewing this summer.

I've been at Alaskan Brewing since 1997.

Sean is also a part of the "Our crew, Our brew" campaign in the form of a recipe card inserted into case boxes this summer. A Food Network junkie, Sean is inspired to adapt and experiment with ideas he sees using wild Alaska seafood and game. His featured recipe, Alaskan Amber Pepper Prawns, uses Alaskan beer as an ingredient and allows him to combine his love of experimentation in the kitchen with his other passion, Alaskan beer.

"I've been at Alaskan Brewing since 1997. I've worked in all areas of the brewery and love being a part of our award-winning crew," he says. His experimentation with cooking carries over into homebrewing where he won Best of Show for his Doppelbock at last year's Southeast Autumn Pour Homebrew Competition. "But what I really like is brewing for the herb and spice/experimental beers since there are no real rules. I can be as creative as I want to be."
