Tyler: Brewer living the Alaskan dream

Tyler Lindquist Tyler came to the Alaskan Brewing Co. for a brewery tour on his birthday and wound up working here. Ever since then he's been living the dream. "Living in Alaska has always been a dream. I've always enjoyed the outdoors," he said. Tyler and his wife, Julie, came to Juneau by chance in 1996. "Juneau was a shot in the dark. We thought we'd try it a year or two and now we've been here about fiveyears. I don't think we're going anywhere."

Tyler is a skilled fly fisherman, spending much of his free time in the summer fishing in the lakes and streams around Juneau. "My claim to fame is that I have caught every species of fish in the area on a fly rod, except king salmon," he said. Tyler has been fly fishing since he was 11 years old. When asked what was the strangest thing he's ever caught, he admitted that he actually once hooked into a bat but promptly released it back into the wild.

In Tyler's world, fishing isn't the only reason he uses a fishing pole. He uses one to occasionally walk Lizard, his pet Iguana. Tyler and his wife brought Lizard with them from Oregon, where Tyler first learned to homebrew. Tyler says that keeping Lizard on a fishing pole makes her much easier to walk. "When I try to hold her she flops like a fish. When she's on the pole I can reel her back in," he said.

Finding new ways to enjoy the outdoors is one of the things he does best. Tyler took up wakeboarding when he moved to Juneau and currently spends a considerable amount of time perfecting his technique at Fritz Cove. He is even a member of Chilly Willy Chump's Wakeboard Club. "You retain your membership by going wakeboarding at least once a month--even in the winter," he said.

In addition to wakeboarding, Tyler spends time snowboarding at the city's ski area, Eaglecrest. He even manages to fit in at least one helicopter ski/snowboarding trip each year. "Usually some of the brewers get together and take a heli-trip up in the Chilkat Range. There's no better place in the world to go for snowboarding," he added.

When Tyler was in the eighth grade he had a subscription to Alaska Magazine, which inspired his dream to move to the Last Frontier. He was always fascinated with the beauty of Alaska's outdoors. A few years and a couple of states later, he's living the Alaska dream by living in Juneau and working as a brewer for Alaskan Brewing Co.
