Saturday Tasting Room event debuts Alaskan Brewing’s latest art showcase

October 3, 2023 (JUNEAU, Alaska) – Alaskan Brewing Company will host local Juneau artist Christine Kleinhenz of Tide Watcher this month at the Tasting Room. On Saturday, October 7, at 2 p.m. Kleinhenz will be in the Tasting Room selling original pieces and more on the final day of AKtoberfest

The Saturday event in the Brewmaster’s Hall at the Alaskan Brewing Company Tasting Room will showcase Kleinhenz’s colorful underwater landscapes. Alaskan fish, like rockfish and herring, are reoccurring in her art and take the spotlight along with bull kelp.

The artist shares that her art is regularly inspired by her dreams, “I’ll be stuck underwater, and I can’t breathe and then my body relaxes and tells me ‘It’s okay’, and then these wonderful images come out where I’m in the middle of a herring ball, or I’m seeing rockfish, salmon, or killer whales. For some reason my brain is just really connected to that world,” she said.

While many of her works are set underwater in a typically dark and cold location, Artist on Tap’s artwork radiates warmth. “I’ll paint the white canvas with either a deep red or pink. As I’m painting over that, sometimes the pinks show through, and it does give a real sense of warmth. I think having a painting feel warm builds connection with the objects inside. They feel more reachable, more emotional,” Kleinhenz said explaining her process.

This is not the first time Alaskan Brewing has highlighted Kleinhenz’s work, earlier this year her work was featured on the Rough Draft brew, Rocky Coast IPA.

“I was on cloud nine for a long time,” said Kleinhenz about being selected. “It’s a feeling of success at a whole different level. Beyond just selling a painting to someone that says that they love your work. It is like somebody trusts you enough, or loves you enough, to align their product with your work.”

The art show is the return of the seasonal showcase, Alaskan Artist on Tap, which is a rotating month-long art installation that highlights local artists at the Alaskan Brewing Tasting Room.
